The reality, in 2026, is more interesting: published prices have crept higher, but the gap between the public fare and what a concierge can actually book has widened — sometimes dramatically.

London to Dubai
Emirates First Class on the A380 — the suites with the shower spa — is the benchmark product on this route. The Boeing 777 first class refit is comparable in everything except the bar and shower.

Why the gap exists
The public price you see on an airline's website is its published retail fare. It is rarely the price the airline actually expects to receive. A meaningful share of premium inventory is sold through private contracts held by consolidators and concierge networks — the same seats, on the same aircraft, with the same status credit, at a substantially lower price. These fares cannot be bookable directly online because the contracts forbid it.
On a London–Dubai first class return, the gap is routinely £2,500 to £4,000. On a London–Sydney first class return, it can exceed £5,000. The cabin product, the lounge access and the chauffeur transfers are identical.
When first class is genuinely worth it
We tend to recommend first class — rather than business — in three scenarios: long-haul flights over nine hours, where the larger bed and quieter cabin make a real difference; milestone travel where the experience itself is part of the occasion; and overnight eastbound flights where arriving rested has commercial or personal value.
On shorter routes — anything under six hours — the difference between business and first is usually not worth the additional spend, even at private fare prices.
